The idea of bodybuilding is that of the process of maximizing one's muscle hypertrophy through a combination of different variations of weight training, a good caloric intake, and sufficient rest. A person who follows this style of regimen is considered a bodybuilder. There is also a sport which is called competitive bodybuilding where bodybuilders display their physiques in front of a panel of judges, who then assign points to the athlete based on their aesthetic appearance.
The muscles that are seen on a body builder are revealed through using a combination of fat loss, different oils, and clean tan lines which along with lighting, creates the definition of each muscle group more visible. There are several famous bodybuilders who include celebrities like Lou Ferrigno, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Reeves, Mike Mentzer, Serge Nubret, Ronnie Coleman, Larry Scott and Jay Cutler.
Although bodybuilding can be dated back as far as the 1880 to the 1930's, it would take a Prussian named Eugene Sandow, The Father of Modern Bodybuilding, to make the concept of bodybuilding a competitive sport.
Sandow was a follower of the Grecian Ideal, which meant that the bodybuilder should be as close in proportions to that of the ancient Greek or Roman statues. In 1901, it was Sandow who arranged the first bodybuilding competition on the Royal Albert Hall back in 1901, which was called simply the Great Competition.
Three years latter in America, the first large scale competition took place in the Madison Square Garden, in which Al Treloar was given the title of The Most Perfectly Developed Man in the World. He won only $1,000 but two weeks after winning, Thomas Edison himself would film Al Treloar doing a posing routine.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was also a famous bodybuilder who is now quite a celebrity as he moved on from Mr. Universe to movie actor to the Governor of California. Bodybuilding and celebrities go hand in hand, but the most important part, is that it was Eugene Sandow, who initially designed some of the various equipment that we still use today in any type of exercising.
